This year's poster is designed by Philip Bell, graphic designer living in Providence RI. Philip is the son of Laurie Corral and has clearly inherited her artistic genes. This is a very cool poster - keep an eye out - they should be popping up around town in the next week or so. Printing of the poster took place onsite at BookWorks with Frank Brannon at the helm and interns Mavis Clapp, Zach Smith, Jaymii Lehr and Mary Claire Becker assisting.
Remember - artwork is due at BookWorks week of September 14-18.

Open House / Hands-On Activities / Demonstrations
BookOpolis the annual show at Asheville BookWorks in West Asheville celebrates its 5th anniversary this year. Artists books, posters and other print media from WNC and around the country are on exhibit at this exciting event. Friday night kicks off the festivities with an opening reception from 6-9PM. Beverages and treats will be served. On Saturday, September 26 noon-6PM features an open house with hands-on activities and demonstrations of papermaking and other printing processes. Bring a blank shirt to print on! We’ll have several silkscreen designs to choose from. Or try letterpress and take home a letterpress sample – as well as loads of creative inspiration!
All events take place at Asheville BookWorks in West Asheville. BookOpolis events are free and open to the public.

The exhibit will showcase works featuring the unique aspects of the book form: multiple surfaces, development of ideas across time, integration of image and text, interesting combinations of concept and structure, and works that take advantage of opportunities offered by this form for interactive and installation-like expression.
Last year’s event was host to over 90 works and over 200 guests attended. The Fifth Annual BookOpolis includes original 2-D prints, hand-printed posters, and letterpress broadsides as well as books. A selected group of artists’ books and prints will remain on display through November 20, 2009.
Asheville BookWorks is a community resource for print and book arts in Asheville and the South East. Classes are held at the studio year round. Instructors include many of the area’s finest artists and nationally renowned artists working in the highly creative field of book arts and printing. The studio has a broad range of equipment for printing and papermaking and has recently expanded into screenprinting. Photography is on the slate for future development.

As the summer winds down we say (hopefully a temporary) goodbye to a couple of interns who we've had the pleasure of working with the past couple months. Mavis Clapp and Joseph Mann were involved in several projects including the 2009 BookOpolis Call for Entries, binding the Cold Mountain Collection and printing of the BookOpolis 2009 poster. Thanks to Joseph and Mavis for their hard work and we wish them the best in their next year. Joseph Mann returned to classes at NC State in Raleigh. Mavis has moved to NY State for the fall to work with Outward Bound
