Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day: A Smashing Success!

On April 26, BookWorks participated in Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. Lynnette Miller helped people expose their photographic paper and process it on-site. View images from Pinhole Photography Day at Asheville BookWorks.

Due to popular request, Lynette will hold a Pinhole Photography weekend workshop in October.

The Art and Craft of Pinhole Photography
October 24 & 25
Instructor: Lynette Miller

The workshop is open to anyone interested in photography. Participants will build several cameras during this workshop with differing shapes and focal lengths. The cameras will be used to create photographs during the class. Miller will cover historical and contemporary uses of pinhole photography; constructing a working camera; exploring exposure times; darkroom processing; and creating negatives. In this fast world, most of us carry a cell phone camera in our pockets daily. Pinhole photography is basic yet intentional, persuading us to slow our pace, use our senses and observe our surroundings.

To register for this workshop, visit our Workshops Schedule page.

Wish List items for the new darkroom:
Any darkroom enlargers and equipment will be put to good use at BookWorks.

Upcoming Exhibition: “Paper Memoirs”
Works by Erin Johnson
May 14-May 28, 2009

Opening Reception: May 14, 7-9 pm
Artist Talk and Gallery Hours: May 15, 7-9 pm
Gallery Hours: May 18-28, Monday-Friday, 1-4 pm

According to Erin, ““Paper Memoirs” is a re-creation of my childhood hiding spots, places that I took refuge in when I was scared, hurt, or wanting to delve into the fantastic. After years of revisiting these memories, they have been changed and faded by use.

The sculptures are comprised of abaca paper I made by hand, slowly pieced together to make ephemeral forms affected by humidity, temperature, light, and human interaction. This is the first time that I have worked with paper to create three-dimensional forms, allowing me the creative freedom to work without fear of mistakes.

In the past, my work has explored how memory functions, subjective versus objective truth, and social justice. By transforming my personal memories into tangible and enterable forms, my hope is that viewers question their own relationship to hiding and how we can work to create a society where all people feel safe and accepted”.

Erin Johnson currently teaches book arts as an adjunct professor at Warren Wilson College and works as the assistant coordinator at Asheville BookWorks.
