Brand New: Screenprinting Studio and Darkroom
BookWorks recently finished the construction of a large darkroom with plenty of counter space, a light-tight drying rack for screens, and an exposure unit. The screen printing studio includes a new wash-out station for screens. As you begin this year’s seasonal spring clearing (storage units, garage, basement and closets) consider Asheville BookWorks, we are seeking donations of B & W enlargers and darkroom equipment for alternative photo processes as well as traditional photography. Limited studio rental in exchange for donations is available upon request.

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day Comes To Asheville

You are invited to participate in a global pinhole extravaganza on April 26th from noon to 5 PM. As part of Worldwide Pinhole Photography day, photographer Lynnette Miller will help people expose their photographic paper and process it on-site! If you have a pinhole camera, bring it with you. Photographs will be scanned and uploaded to the official site, www.pinholeday.org.

A five dollar donation covers materials, processing, scanning, and uploading of your pinhole photograph to the Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day website. All ages welcome and children must be accompanied by an adult.

What is Worldwide Pinhole Photography day?

This is an international event created to promote and celebrate the art of pinhole photography. On this unique day, we encourage people throughout the world to take some time off from the increasingly technological world we live in and to participate in the simple act of making a pinhole photograph.

Pinhole photography allows you to make a photograph that requires only a light-tight container (box, can,...) with a tiny hole in one side (as a camera) and any photo-sensitive surface in it. You can adapt an existing camera, or make the camera yourself.

Why Asheville BookWorks?

A recently constructed darkroom and renovated studio space for photography, screen printing and alternative print processes is complete. On April 4 & 5 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, Lynette Miller will teach a special workshop on Pinhole Photography at BookWorks in preparation of Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day celebrations:

The Art and Craft of Pinhole Photography
April 4 & 5
Instructor: Lynette Miller
$185 + material fee $10

The workshop is open to anyone interested in photography. Participants will build several cameras during this workshop with differing shapes and focal lengths. The cameras will be used to create photographs during the class. Miller will cover historical and contemporary uses of pinhole photography; constructing a working camera; exploring exposure times; darkroom processing; and creating negatives. In this fast world, most of us carry a cell phone camera in our pockets daily. Pinhole photography is basic yet intentional, persuading us to slow our pace, use our senses and observe our surroundings.
