SPECIAL EDITIONS

THE MEMOIRS OF HELEN KOTTANNER
Award-Winning Edition by Gwen Diehn

We are thrilled to report that Gwen Diehn's artist's book, Helene Kottanner's 'Memoir', has won the National Museum of Women in the Arts' Library Fellows Award for 2008. The Museum awards a grant each year for the production of an edition of 125 of an artist's book done by a woman.

The book is based on a translation of a memoir, written in1450, by a handmaid to the queen of Hungary. The memoir was translated by Hildegard Stalzer from Middle High German into modern German and English. For the artist's book, Gwen made 53 woodcuts to illustrate the book's 25 pages. In addition, Gwen integrated ancient Hungarian proverbs into the design of the book.

BookWorks was fortunate to host Gwen for the past two years as she editioned this monumental project. The edition is nearing completion, and Gwen is currently hand-painting each page of every book. Gwen anticipates finishing the painting, collating, pasting, folding, and hole-punching by March. Upon completion of these final steps, BookWorks will proudly host a group volunteers to assist Gwen in sewing the 125 books over the course of two weekends. We'll keep you posted as this award-winning edition progresses. Congratulations, Gwen, and thank you choosing Asheville BookWorks to be a part of this incredible project!

COLLABORATIVE BROADSIDE EDITION

BROADSIDES PROJECT COMPLETED WITH ASSISTANCE FROM THE NC ARTS COUNCIL

The completion of three collaborative broadsides this year was made possible through Asheville Area Arts Council Grant. Sebastian Matthews, poet, writer and editor of Rivendale press wrote the grant and together with Steve Godwin, graphic designer and Laurie Corral, director of Bookworks produced three broadside prints: Love Poem by Sebastian Matthews, China Traces by Charles Wright and Amigos by Matthew Dickman.  This collaboration marked a successful partnership and has initiated several collaborative projects with writers planned for 2008.

INTERLUDE EDITIONS
'Whisper' Small Book Edition PURCHASED BY THE COLLECTION OF THE FINE ART MUSEUM OF WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY, NC

As we detailed in our September/October newsletter, the Small Book Edition is a compilation of work from 14 artists working in the book form in Western NC. Thanks to the generosity of this talented group, one copy of the complete Small Book Edition themed 'Whisper' was auctioned during BookOpolis 2007 to support Interlude Editions. In addition, individual copies of each single bookwork included in the edition were auctioned individually.

Altogether, the Small Book Edition raised $800 for Interlude Editions! We are also proud to report that 'Whisper' was purchased by Western Carolina Fine Arts Museum to become a part of their permanent collection. We would like to extend a hearty thanks to all those who helped to secure the future of Interlude Editions by taking part in this project and contributing to the auction or raffle.

At BookWorks, we recognize that artists working in the book form often lack the space, equipment, creative resources and dedicated time that they need to create their work. For these artists, creating an edition (multiple handcrafted copies) of their work is a particular challenge, yet editioning their work is one of the best ways for book artists to introduce their work more broadly to the community.

Interlude Editions (IE) was established this year to address this pressing need by providing three-month residencies to artists working in the field of book arts who wish to create limited editions of artists’ books and fine art prints for education, exhibition and distribution. During the length of the residency, IE will provide each artist with:

(1) Dedicated studio space at Asheville BookWorks
(2) Full use of he extensive range of equipment and tools available at BookWorks
(3) Ongoing consultation and potential collaboration with BookWorks studio artists
(4)A modest stipend to cover the cost of materials and related expenses during the three-month period of the residency
(5) Studio Artist status at BookWorks

To raise awareness and address the interest of the book arts in the Western North Carolina community, IE resident artists will be invited to offer demonstrations, exhibit their work and/or participate in studio tours for the general public.

To be considered for an IE residency, artists must submit a comprehensive application to the IE Selection Committee. One artist will be selected for each three-month period. The IE Selection Committee is comprised of qualified members of the Western North Carolina arts and business community. Selection criteria will focus the scope and feasibility of the artist’s proposal and the nature and quality of the artist’s previous work.

You can help Interlude Editions provide an artist with the time, resources and support that he or she needs to create their best work. Your tax-deductible donation will allow dedicated artists to achieve new levels of excellence and reach new audiences, and help the Western North Carolina community attain greater prominence for artistic achievement. Please see our informational brochure for more details regarding IE and donor benefits.

IE expects to select two resident artists in the spring of 2008, to serve separate three-month residencies during the year. We'll keep you posted as this exciting new project develops, and we welcome your involvement at any level!
