BOOKWORKS NEWSLETTER - February/March 2007
Welcome to the February/March 2007 edition of the BookWorks Newsletter, our now BI-MONTHLY on-line publication that features classes and events taking place at Asheville BookWorks. In addition to our newsletter, we hope you'll take a look at our FEBRUARY-MAY 2007 CLASS CATALOG featuring workshops taught by Jennifer Brook, Daniel Essig, Brandon Mise, Katherine McGinn, Heather Allen Swarttouw, our resident Studio Artists and three new instructors NEW to BookWorks (see below). We invite you to stop by our studio at 428 1/2 Haywood Road and grab your own letterpress printed copy of the catalog, which is available now, hot off the presses! You can also browse the entire 2007 CLASS CATALOG on-line at any time by clicking on the Workshops link above.

In 2007, our resolution is to make the website as comprehensive and up-to-date as possible. Therefore, we invite you to look on-line first for information about our classes and upcoming events. Though we will continue to publish our printed catalog three times each year, all of the included information will be available on-line months before it goes to press. If you'd like to receive the letterpress printed catalog via mail, feel free to give us a call at (828) 255-8444, or send us your information via e-mail to info@ashevillebookworks.com. We're also happy to provide bundles of catalogs for you to distribute to anyone who might be interested in taking a class. Just let us know. We hope to see you many times this year at BookWorks!
CLASSES
Featured Instructors: NEW to BookWorks in 2007
Benares Finan-Eshelman
Benares Finan-Eshelman started keeping a journal at the age of eight, and it wasn't until 16 years later at Penland School of Crafts that she learned to bind her own books and make paper.  She currently lives in New Bedford, Mass where she creates books from paper, wax and cloth.  She received her MFA in Fibers from UMASS-Dartmouth in 2005 and works at Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA as Community Programs Director.  She has taught book making workshops for both children and adults in Ohio, California, Massachusetts and North Carolina. Benares will be teaching the following classes at BookWorks this spring:

Cloth Books
April 22
Sunday
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Combine your love for cloth and books.  Students will create their own patterned cloth with textile inks and learn simple sewing and embroidery techniques to make sculptural book forms in both traditional and non-traditional means.  Bring plenty of small found objects and scraps of cloth to create a meaningful narrative throughout your cloth book.  Sewing machine is not necessary, but may be helpful.

Beeswax and Books

Saturday
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

In this course you will begin by learning the ancient Egypian art of painting with beeswax mixed with colored pigments, known as encaustic painting. Students will learn several ways to apply encaustics to a surface and will use the medium to create covers for a Coptic bound book. Instruction in preparing a text block and sewing a Coptic binding will be given.
Celia Gray
Celia Gray is a studio artist working in encaustic painting and steel sculpture.  In 2003 she completed the two-year Core Student program at Penland School of Crafts, where she studied primarily blacksmithing and encaustic painting.  She has also been a studio assistant at Penland School of Crafts. Celia is now a local studio artist and showing regionally. Celia will be teaching the following workshops at BookWorks this spring:

Encaustic Painting
May 5 & 6
Saturday & Sunday
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

This class will cover the basics of the ancient technique of painting with pigmented beeswax, encaustic painting. It will begin with making the encaustic medium and paints, fusing layers, tools and safety. We will cover the many ways to create imagery and textures by layering, carving, incising, scraping, burnishing and branding the wax. We will also cover methods of collaging and photo transferring into wax. This is a medium with endless possibilities and can be adapted to accompany many other methods of working, both 2D and 3D. If you would like to collage, bring flat, absorbent materials such as recycled scraps, prints, drawings and/or fresh photocopies for transferring.
Steve Pittlekow
As a bookbinder, Steve Pittelkow’s interest in marbled designs stems from a longtime desire to personalize his own books with distinctive papers and cloth. Steve especially enjoys teaching the craft and revealing the secrets for successful marbling. Over the years, Steve has experimented with a wide variety of paints and papers in his quest for materials that allow students a rich and successful marbling experience. His papers appear in museum and library collections and are used by binders and book artists nationally and internationally. Steve will be teaching the following workshops at BookWorks this spring:

Marbling on Paper & Cloth
March 24 & 25
Saturday & Sunday
10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Discover the magic and hypnotic technique of paper decoration known as marbling. Since its invention over 600 years ago, marbling has fascinated people around the world. Paints are floated on a thickened water bath and then teased into patterns to provide endless hours of creativity resulting in beautifully decorated paper. In this class, students will learn the history and terminology of marbling, preparation of materials, techniques and patterns and will acquire skill to continue to marble at home. Students will also learn to marble on cloth and will leave class with a collection of papers for all types of projects.
