BOOKOPOLIS 2007
THIRD ANNUAL EXHIBITION
Open Call for Artists' Books, Broadsides & Posters
September 10 - 14
Monday - Friday

It's that time again! For our third consecutive year, we are inviting all artists working in the book form to submit work to Asheville BookWorks during the week of September 10-14 for inclusion in the BookOpolis Exhibition. The call is open for this non-juried exhibition, and we invite artists of all levels to participate. This year, artists are invited to submit up to two pieces for the exhibit. Works may be one-of-a-kind or editioned, and may include sculptural books, pop-ups, altered books, hand-bound journals and 2-D PRINT MEDIA (new this year!), especially letterpress broadsides and posters. Our purpose with this exhibition is to showcase the incredible amount and variety of work currently being produced by book artists in the Asheville area and beyond.

All work will be on display for the entirety of BookOpolis 2007, at both the September 21st Exhibition Opening and at the September 22nd Family Activity Day. Work will be available for pick-up during the following week of September 24-28, unless contacted otherwise. A small selection of work will be exhibited through December 10th. All other work must be retrieved by September 28th. Please note, commercially reproduced books and prints are not eligible for this particular exhibit.

To participate, simply download and complete the BookOpolis 2007 Submission Form-pdf and submit it with your work to the BookWorks studio during the week of September 10-14. During that week, work may either be dropped off at studio during business hours or mailed to BookWorks for reception. Please be sure to include your completed Submission Form with your hand-delivered or mailed work, and ensure that mailed work will arrive at the studio on or before September 14th.

If you have any questions, please give either Laurie or Micah a call at 828-255-8444 or send us an e-mail at info@ashevillebookworks.com. We look forward to seeing you and your work at BookWorks!

INTRODUCING INTERLUDE EDITIONS
A Non-Profit Residency Program for Book Artists
Interlude: a relatively short period of time during which something happens that is different from what has happened before and what follows.
After months of preparation we are proud to introduce Interlude Editions, a non-profit residency program founded to provide funding and support for artists working in the field of book arts. The program will invite artists to create limited editions of artists’ books and fine art prints for education, exhibition and distribution.

Interlude Editions' first year goals include: (1) selecting two artists to receive funding to complete a book or broadside edition, (2) raising awareness and interest for book arts via local community outreach, and (3) developing funding projects and seeking support through grants.

Interlude editions is conceived of as a self-sustaining, independent non-profit loosely associated with Asheville BookWorks.

Keep your eyes peeled over the next few months for news regarding Interlude Editions. Guidelines for residency applications will soon be posted on the BookWorks website! Also, be sure to join us at BookOpolis 2007, during which BookWorks will host an initial fundraising event for Interlude Editions. See below for more details.
'WHISPER'

In addition to the complete 14-work edition, individual copies of each single book work included in the edition will be auctioned or raffled separately.

STEVE MILLER TO VISIT BOOKWORKS IN OCTOBER
Coordinator of the MFA in Book Arts Program at University of Alabama
October 4, Thursday evening, 7:00 p.m.

We are looking forward to the arrival of Steve Miller at the BookWorks studio! During his one-semester sabbatical from the University of Alabama, Steve is spending some time in Western NC and will join us for an evening presentation. Beginning at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 4th, Steve will speak to us about book arts, letterpress and the MFA in Book Arts Program at University of Alabama, of which he is the Coordinator. In addition, he will speak about his experiences with the Cuba Book Projects. Steve will bring several of the books that have been collaboratively produced through this project with printmakers, papermakers and bookbinders in Cuba. For more information, see Steve's bio below. We hope you'll join us for this rare opportunity to gain knowledge from one of the book arts fields' most active artists and advocates.

Steve Miller founded Red Ozier Press in 1976 — a fine press devoted to publishing literary first editions in handmade limited editions. In 1979, Miller moved the Press to New York City where he and Ken Botnick refined bookmaking to an art. The books have been widely exhibited and reviewed, and are in the collections of many libraries and private collections. In 1988, The New York Public Library purchased the entire archive of the Red Ozier Press for its permanent collection.

Steve Miller arrived at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1988, where he is a Professor and teaches letterpress printing and hand papermaking in the MFA in the Book Arts Program, and is Coordinator of the program. Although his primary focus at the University is in the teaching of traditional bookmaking, he is also the proprietor of Red Hydra Press.

Steve Miller is a Co-Director of Paper and Book Intensive, a nationally recognized annual series of summer workshops in the book arts. He is chair of the Advisory Board of the Robert C. Williams American Museum of Papermaking in Atlanta, Georgia, and is past President of the Friends of Dard Hunter, Inc., an international group of artists, crafts persons, conservators and scientists.

Since the Spring of 2004 Miller has organized eight working trips to Cuba, some with UA students and faculty to create bilingual limited edition books in collaboration with Cuban artists and papermakers.
