BookWorks Teen Program
Limited to Ages 15-18
We are thrilled to continue our new BookWorks Teen Program this spring, designed specifically with the teenage student in mind. For this program, BookWorks Instructors facilitate a series of sessions throughout the year, with themes ranging from printmaking to bookbinding to zine making. Visiting artists regularly take part in the program, bringing their expertise and enthusiasm to a new generation of book artists. Come join us at BookWorks for this creative alternative to your average after school program. Our April and May teen classes are featured below.
Screen-Printed Posters
WEEK-LONG for Spring Break!
April 9-13
Instructor: Katherine McGinn
Monday - Friday: 12:003:00 pm

This class covers all the screen-printing basics to create your own unique poster prints. Starting with your sketches and designs we will make a high contrast (black and white) image to expose onto a screen. Imagery can be hand-drawn, written, photographic or collaged. Once your image is on the screen you can experiment with color printing onto paper and T-Shirts. Towards the end of the class we will do a portfolio exchange of everyone prints. Class size limited to 6 students.
Recycled Books for Teens
May 8, 15 and 22
Instructor: Micah Pulleyn
Tuesdays: 4:006:00 pm

Use materials that are readily available around the house and community to make fun books that can be private journals or whimsical sketchbooks, homes for collections or sanctuaries for dreams. We will begin with basic projects that are easy to do and then explore more involved book structures. This class is open to young adults in grades 4-6.

The Craft of Bookbinding
Monthly Series
This series of workshops provides an exciting and affordable way for you to immerse yourself in the art of the book. With The Craft of Bookbinding Monthly Series, our emphasis is on the craft of bookbinding, including its history, aesthetics and related materials, tools and equipment. Throughout the year, we explore many structures with which you can create your own personalized books. Each month concentrates on a specific bookbinding technique. If you are new to The Craft of Bookbinding Monthly Series, begin by signing up for a complimentary Introduction to BookWorks session. Our April and May classes from this series are featured below.

Boxes can be both protective and decorative.These two structures are especially designed to hold ephemera, photos and other loose objects.Additionally, we will make some of our own book cloth and decorative papers to use.
The Craft of Bookbinding
Secret Belgian Binding
May 7, 14 & 21
Instructor: Laurie Corral
Monday evenings: 6:00 - 9:00 pm

This surprisingly lovely structure was discovered and designed by book artist Hedi Kyle. It features a floating spine opens fully flat for ease of use and combines several decorative papers. We will make sample sewing cards for practice and future reference as we bind this book together.

Pursuing Excellence: Studio Craft Movement
Western North Carolina, A Group Exhibition

We encourage you to visit Blue Spiral 1 this month for an exhibition featuring our own BookWorks' Instructor Heather Allen Swarttouw. This is an exciting opportunity to experience the variety and depth of studio craft being created regionally in Western North Carolina, not to mention a chance to see Heather's incredible work beautifully displayed at one of Asheville's premiere galleries. Congratuations, Heather!
As explained on the Blue Spiral website, "Blue Spiral 1 and the Center for Craft, Creativity & Design join in presenting a landmark exhibition featuring work by 19 exceptional regional artists in clay, steel, glass, fiber and wood. These artists represent the caliber of work being produced in the area surrounding Asheville, NC - recognized nationally as a focal point for contemporary Studio Craft".

Heather Allen Swarttouw
Heather Allen Swarttouw is a studio artist creating with cloth, ceramic and mixed media.She received her BFA in painting and sculpture from the University of New Hampshire and her MFA in textiles from the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth.She exhibited and taught throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, Nepal, Thailand and Singapore.Creating a personal reference library of creative journals has given her insights and propelled her in her current creative explorations. She wrote "Journaling and My Creative Process" that appeared in the Summer 2003 issue of Surface Design Journal.Heather is currently teaching Keeping Creative Journals at Asheville BookWorks. The class started on March 29th and will run through May 24th.

Action/Interaction: Book/Arts Conference 2007

June 8-10
The Action/Interaction: Book/Arts Conference 2007 will be held in June and has been organized by The Center for Book & Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago. The Center for Book & Paper Arts is "dedicated to the teaching and exploration of concept and craft at the intersections of bookmaking, visual arts, and language". With the 2007 conference, the Center hopes "to raise the level of critical discourse among students and practitioners in the book arts field; to examine what we do as artists and why". The conference will include a program of lectures and participatory guided discussions, a juried exhibit surveying contemporary work from center of book arts around the country (INCLUDING ASHEVILLE BOOKWORKS!), and a book fair for showcasing and selling current work. BookWorks is now offering a regular schedule of Hours Open to the Public. If you have questions about BookWorks, our schedule of classes, our exhibition space, our studios for rent, or if you'd just like to stop by for a visit, we'll be on-hand and at your service every week during the hours listed above. BookWorks is now offering a regular schedule of Open Studio Hours for any student who attends a BookWorks class. Open Studio takes place every Monday evening, except the first Monday of each month, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. BookWorks Director Laurie Corral is on-hand during Open Studio to discuss projects and assist with equipment. Equipment available to students during Open Studio includes:
