Paper Making:

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Gwen Diehn and the Warren Wilson College Art Department, BookWorks will be offering two Paper Making workshops this spring. Taught by artists Colin Frazer and Micah Pulleyn, the weekend workshops will take place at Warren Wilson and will make wonderful use of the college's paper making facilities. The aim of the workshops is for participants, regardless of their incoming skill levels, to become full-fleged "amateur home paper makers", as explained by instructor Colin Frazer. This class stresses the Do-It-Yourself nature of paper and explores it's accessibility as a medium that can be successfully engaged and explored without the need for a studio.

Colin and Micah are both very interested and committed to using recycled and natural fibers in their paper making. In addition, both artists are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy spending as much time as possible outside of the studio, searching for materials and inspiration for their work. Hence, Colin and Micah will encourage workshop participants to actively engage their environments as a part of the paper making process.

Students in the Paper Making classes will be introduced to the theory and history of paper making while learning the basics of the process. Students will make their own moulds and deckles and prepare pulp from found, recycled and natural materials. The class will then cast sheets from their pulp, learn how to successfully dry their sheets and discuss possible uses based on the resulting hand made paper.

Paper Making will be offered by BookWorks on two occasions this spring, once in April and once in May. Both workshops are two-day, weekend-long courses. We invite you to visit our Workshop page for more detailed class descriptions, and we hope you will also visit our Instructors page to learn more about artists Colin Frazer and Micah Pulleyn and their work.

Slow Book Salon at Asheville BookWorks

The Slow Book Salon, a recently formed group of WNC book arts enthusiasts, held their February meeting at Asheville BookWorks on Sunday, February 26th. Laurie Corral, Director of BookWorks, was delighted to facilitate the meeting, which focused on sharing works-in-progress and featured a group critiquing session. The Slow Book Salon has been meeting on a monthly basis since September of 2005, and the group has grown into a vibrant and active community of book artists / advocates. Over the past few months, Slow Book Salon activities have ranged from paper making to artfully journaling to gelatin printing. In addition, Slow Book Salon participants are pursuing several exhibition opportunities, both in the WNC area and beyond.

Each Slow Book Salon meeting presents a wonderful forum for participants to share information about upcoming events and opportunities in the book arts. If you'd like to join The Slow Book Salon mailing list, please send a message to info@ashevillebookworks.com with SLOW BOOK SALON in the subject line. We'll add your e-mail to the list and you'll soon begin receiving updates as to upcoming meeting as and activities. The next Slow Book Salon meeting will take place in March and will focus on developing content for and within the book form. Please contact BookWorks for details regarding the date, time and location of the next meeting.

A Farewell to Studio Artist Steve Godwin

Directly following the February Slow Book Salon meeting, we said a bittersweet farewell to Studio Artist Steve Godwin with a send-off soiree at BookWorks. Steve is heading to the Vermont Studio Center for a month-long writing retreat, after which he'll spend several more weeks in New England. Steve will return briefly in April to wrap up a collaborative broadside project that he is producing together with poet and Warren Wilson Professor Sebastian Matthews and BookWorks' Director Laurie Corral. The broadside project is made possible by a Regional Artist Project Grant from the Asheville Arts Council. Steve will once again return to Asheville in June to focus on his book work, though the length of his stay has yet to be determined. We will miss Steve dearly and wish him the best of luck for this next leg of the Adventure. We hope his June return will be a permanent one. Our best to you from BookWorks, Steve!

Studio Space Available at Asheville BookWorks

Due to Studio Artist Steve Godwin's departure, we currently have two vacant Studio Spaces available for resident Studio Artists at BookWorks. Studio Space is available at a rate of $275 / month, which includes 24-hour access to the BookWorks studio and an incredible array of book making equipment. Please scroll down to the BookWorks Opportunities bar below to read more about this opportunity. If you're interested in having your studio in our space, please give us a call at (828) 255-8444 or send us an e-mail at info@ashevillebookworks.com. We hope you'll take advantage of this opportunity and help us fill the space in our studio and in our hearts. We miss you already, Steve!
