Throughout the year, we explore a variety of structures with which you can create your own personalized books. Each month concentrates on a specific bookbinding technique. Topics for this spring include Limp Vellum Binding, Basic Binding I, Making Your Own Book Cloth, Secret Belgian Binding and Japanese Stab Binding. If you are new to The Craft of Bookbinding monthly series, begin by signing up for a complimentary Introduction to BookWorks session on the first Monday of every month.

Introduction to BookWorks Equipment and Tools Overview
For anyone interested in book arts or renting studio time / space, this is also a must for The Craft of Bookbinding monthly series. On the first Monday of each month, we take a tour of the studio, learn proper and safe use of the board shears and paper guillotine, become familiar with basic tools and materials, and provide an introduction to book and paper vernacular. This monthly introduction is available at no charge, but please be sure to register if you plan to attend.

Announcing the Bi-Annual BookWorks Edition Project
Inaugural Featured Artist: Jennifer Brook

In 2006, BookWorks is launching a new project designed to encourage emerging and established book artists to further develop their craft by inviting them to edition one of their artist books at the BookWorks studio. Chosen artists will be given free access to the BookWorks studio and provided with the support of the BookWorks staff and two interns dedicated solely to the project. We plan to edition two books annually through this program. Our inaugural featured artist for the spring of 2006 is Jennifer Brook. Jennifer will be editioning Transplant, a bookwork that explores how memory, when absent of structure or landscape, becomes encoded in our bodies. Transplant will be hand-bound and printed from handset type on the BookWorks letterpress in a limited edition of 48 books. The anticipated date of release for the book is March 13th. Joining Jennifer for this project will be Grace Smith and Caitlin Shanley, two students from UNCA who are working as interns at BookWorks for the spring semester. Our thanks to Grace and Caitlin, and to UNCA for the partnership that makes this project possible. You can read more about Transplant on Jennifer's website at http://jennybrook.com/transintro.html, where you can also reserve your own numbered and signed copy of the edition.

Keep your eye out for news of the official release date and an invitation to the BookWorks release party in March!

Professional Development Workshops for Teachers
Designed and Administered by BookWorks
As a new arts education initiative in 2006, BookWorks will begin providing professional development workshops for teachers, inviting them to explore the art of the book and integrate the book arts into their curriculum. Our first workshop will take place on two consecutive Saturdays, January 28th and February 4th, at the BookWorks studio. For this introductory workshop, we will host 10 elementary school teachers from two West Asheville schools, Francine Delany New School for Children and Rainbow Mountain, providing them with a total of 10 hours of bookmaking instruction. Topics will include: one-sheet bindings, the pamphlet stitch, concertina and accordion books, japanese stab bindings, tunnel books, pocket books, pop-up books, paste papers, mark-making, board covering and curriculum development. This first workshop is a pilot for our arts education programming, which we will further develop and expand throughout the coming year. If you are a teacher, program coordinator, administrator or art education advocate, please contact BookWorks to discuss the possibilities for future partnership and programming in the book arts.
