Frank Brannon

Frank was born in Maryville, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains, and currently lives near Dillsboro, North Carolina. He is a 2005 graduate of the M.F.A. in the Book Arts Program at the University of Alabama and is proprietor of SpeakEasy Press. He previously studied Physics (M.S., 1991 and B.S., Phi Beta Kappa, 1987) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The limited edition, letterpress books that Frank produces are held in several special collections libraries in the United States and England as well as with private collectors. His most recent monograph focuses upon research into the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper of northern Georgia, 1828-1834. In 2008 Frank was lead letterpress printer for the Penland School of Crafts Winter Residency in Letterpress.

Gwen Diehn

Gwen Diehn’s prints, drawings, and artists’ books have been exhibited widely and are in many collections, including The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC.  She has taught various forms of art for many years.  She is the author of several Sterling/Lark books, including Simple Printmaking (2000), The Decorated Page (2002), The Decorated Journal (2005), and Real Life Journals, forthcoming in August, 2010.

In addition, Gwen team teaches the BookWorks series, “Buddy Up”, with her grandson, Jacob Diehn. Together they have been making paint from local clay pigments for nearly 3 years.

Heather Hietala

Heather Hietala (formerly Allen-Swarttouw) is a studio artist creating with cloth, ceramic and mixed media. She received her BFA in painting and sculpture from the University of New Hampshire and her MFA in textiles from the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth. She exhibited and taught throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, Nepal, Thailand and Singapore. Creating a personal reference library of creative journals has given her insights and propelled her in her current creative explorations. She wrote “Journaling and My Creative Process” that appeared in the Summer 2003 issue of Surface Design Journal.

Jessica White

Jessica C. White is originally from Taipei, Taiwan, but spent many of her formative years in central and eastern North Carolina. She is now a studio artist and sole proprietor of Heroes and Criminals Press located in Asheville, NC. Her work is both visually and textually inspired by children’s book images, medieval bestiaries, and folk tales. She enjoys exploring themes that revolve around good versus evil, right and wrong, justice, and wonder.

Fancy degrees she holds are an MFA and MA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa, a Graduate Certificate in Book Studies from the University of Iowa Center for the Book, a BFA in sculpture from East Carolina University, half of a pilot’s license, and half of a sailing certificate. Feel free to contact her for printing or binding jobs, but no requests please for flying or sailing the high seas.

Jim Horton

James Horton, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, is an instructor of art and graphic design, while also practicing letterpress book arts and printmaking. He has a particular interest in printing history, antique machinery and processes that played a key role in the history of graphic arts. He learned wood engraving from David Sander, author and artist, of one of the last commercial engraving companies in the US.

Jim is the hub of an international organization called the Wood Engravers’ Network (www.woodengravers.net). His work was recently published in the international anthology, An Engravers’ Globe (Primrose Hill Press, London). Jim is an honorary member of the British Society of Wood Engraving and is now included in the SWE traveling exhibitions.  Jim teaches studio art at Hollander’s School of Book Arts, The John Campbell Folk School, Frogman’s Print & Paper Workshops and the Augusta Heritage Center, at Davis & Elkins College, WV.
