Description: Three incredible instructors have teamed up and put together a letterpress intensive for students who want to move forward quickly in a letterpress practice and are interested in working independently in the BookWorks letterpress studio.
The first session will explore the basics of letterpress printing and hand typesetting, including type composition, mixing ink, press set-up, and printing on and maintaining the Vandercook Proof Press. We will explore the ways that letterpress printing can add texture, words and a new dimension to your print and book work. Students will design and produce a small project of their own such as a business card, greeting or post card as well as potentially participate in a group broadside project. In subsequent days we will work to increase participant’s familiarity and comfort level with regard to letterpress printing, and each student will produce a single signature, pamphlet stitched book using a text and theme of their choosing. We will also explore printmaking techniques using the Vandercook proof press for illustrative purposes, e.g. linoleum block cuts or Sandragraphs.
Also covered are skills and techniques that focus upon the printing press itself: roller height adjustment, tympan packing, inking and general maintenance. Troubleshooting in printing related to the press will be covered with the goal of each participant ready to work independently in the letterpress studio. Other potential topics for discussion are page design, editioning and printing on dampened paper.
The studio will be open on Tuesday for students who want to set type.
