Gelatin Prints and Two Ways to Bind Them (Drum Leaf and Stiff Leaf)

January 28 – 29, 2012
Saturday & Sunday: 9am – 5pm (1 hour lunch break)

Instructor: Jessica C. White
Class fee: $241  (includes a $25 materials fee for mat board, PVA, Japanese paper for spine supports, gelatin plates, ink, and some paper for printing.)

Description: Gelatin printing is a type of monotype (unique, one-of-a-kind prints) using unflavored gelatin as a printing surface. This is a simple and versatile process that needs no press and uses water-based inks, so it can be easily done in a home studio or kitchen table. Results can range from delicate, detailed prints made from everyday objects to painterly images that show every brush stroke.

In this workshop, we will get creative and play with a variety of gelatin printing techniques, then bind them into two types of book structures, the Drum Leaf and the Stiff Leaf, both well suited for prints and other single-page images. These types of bindings are perfect for painters, printers, and artists who want create books without breaking up the image across gutters, or deal with complex layouts for creating signatures. These bindings also allow the artist to layout pages in a more intuitive way, and each finished spread opens flat for full viewing.

No previous printing or book binding experience is necessary.
