This class is for artists and creative people who have blank books just waiting to be filled. Creative journals are repositories for things that inspire us, from phrases to images, and therefore places we can go to when seeking creative inspiration. They can take many shapes. They allow one to stop and savor, to explore and to foster inner awareness. The first evening we will make a multi-pamphlet journal to use during the class. Over the course of 6 evening sessions we will explore various types of journals and the different purposes they serve, as well as various approaches to keeping them.

This class will introduce the wonders of block printing and stencils and integral components of a creative vocabulary. Block prints or stamps and stencils are some of the oldest techniques for imparting pattern and imagery to paper and cloth. We will use simple carving tools and a variety of materials including Easy Cut and felt to create unique and personal blocks. Stencils will be explored separately and combined with block printing. Blocks and stencils can be as simple or sophisticated as the maker wants them to be. Using the more traditional inks for paper and textile paints for cloth will allow us to print the stamps both on paper and cloth. Low tech and as easy or as complicated as the individual, these techniques are a wonderful way to expand your vocabulary and individualize your work.
