Boxmaking: Japanese Portfolios
June 22-24, 2012
Fri 6-9, Sat 9-5, Sun 9-5
Instructor: Bridget Elmer
$271 (includes fee for shared supplies.)
Description: The third in a series of boxmaking workshops, this class will use Ikegami’s classic text Japanese Bookbinding as a point of departure. We will explore the primary Japanese-style wraparound case (maru chitsu), which serves as a foundational structure for all other Japanese-style cases. Students will learn a progression of steps that culminate in a custom enclosure for a book or a collection of similarly sized books, complete with bone clasps and a title strip. Students with previous boxmaking experience will be best prepared to approach this structure. However, willing and dedicated beginners are also welcome! Students should bring a book or collection of similarly sized books that they wish to enclose.
