Basics of Typography and the Printed Book

Friday – Sunday: 10am – 5pm (1 hour lunch break)

Class fee: $346 (includes a $25 materials fee for inks, solvents and other expendable supplies needed for printing and contributes to the on-going upkeep of the presses and paper cutters.)
Prerequisite: Introduction to Letterpress Printing
Description: The goal of this class is to introduce the basic principles of typography and to implement them in a class book project. We will cover practical design choices including how to choose the right typeface, leading, word spacing and kerning. We will also explore the concept of the whole book: how choices made about content and form affect the process as well as the finished object. This class will include a quick introduction to InDesign and how to prepare files for making photopolymer plates. Each student will design and print one page of a class book project that will serve as a sampler for future book projects.
Please bring the following items to the first class:
- Pencil
- Notebook
- A selection of text: poetry or prose
