Altered Books, Part 2

August 28, 2011
Sunday, 9 – 5 PM
$105 + $5 materials fee
Instructor, Carol Owen

Part 2:
This workshop will build on what was taught the first day (or will add to your repertoire if you’ve had some previous experience with altered books). Carol will show you more advanced techniques (not all that difficult) more pockets, more pop-ups, more ways to enrich and embellish your book. Carol will also show you many ways to do the cover.

Students should bring:

  • A hardbound book (you’re willing to cut up and/or paint), preferably a sturdy book with sewn in signatures, not glued in (not Reader’s Digest type books). Best to avoid shiny pages (they don’t take paint well), or books so old that the pages are brittle. A book at least 1” thick.
  • Small cutting mat
  • X-Acto knife with sharp blade
  • Scissors, ruler, pencil
  • Glue stick (Uhu is a good brand)
  • Sobo glue (a textile glue)
  • Small jar of Mod Podge
  • Small jar of matte gel medium
  • A few acrylic paints
  • An assortment of rubber stamps, and some rubber stamp dye ink pads, if you have them
  • Materials for collage, such as photocopies of photographs, decorative papers, an old magazine with images you’d like to use
  • Small embellishment items such as beads, buttons, coins.
  • Eyelets, brads, tags, if you have them
  • A few brushes or sponges for glue and paints
  • Wax paper
  • Double stick tape
  • 6 small envelopes (can be small business size envelopes, or small coin envelopes; they should all be the same size)
  • 1 pkg. of decorative cocktail napkins
  • 1 small zipper, 4”-7”

Altered Books, Part 1

August 27, 2011
Saturday, 9 – 5 PM

Instructor, Carol Owens

Altered book artists like to say there are no rules. To that I would add, just a chance to play and have fun. In this workshop we will use collage and embellishment to turn old books into interactive works of art.

Part I:

Each student will make a reference book of the techniques demonstrated. I will show you various easy ways to get color and texture on a page. We will do pockets, slits and pull-outs, tip-ins (add in pages), niches, windows, and drawers, transparencies, and many different kinds of pop ups. Examples of altered books will be shown. This class is suitable for all levels.

Using flowers, ferns, leaves etc…from Heather’s garden this class will give you the basic drawing skills and confidence to capture the elegance and mystery of them.  Over the course of 6 evening sessions we will explore drawing media, the different purposes they serve, as well as various approaches to using them. We will draw on loose paper that will be bound into a book at the conclusion of the class. Possible field trip.
