In this 3-day workshop, we will lay the foundation for an encaustic painting practice.  We will begin with the basics of this ancient technique of painting with pigmented beeswax, including tools and safety, making the encaustic medium and paints, and fusing layers.  We will go on to explore the many ways to create imagery and texture by carving, incising, scraping, collaging, transferring and using gold leaf.  From there we will delve into 3-D possibilities including low and high relief, and mold making and casting using silicone and plaster.  There will be demonstrations, discussion of historical and contemporary works, lots of work time and exploration, and plenty of time to learn from each other’s results.  All levels welcome.

This multi-evening course is an opportunity to explore a form that pushes the boundaries of the book into empowering, ephemeral territory. Emily Larned, a zinester and historian of the form, defines the zine as “a self-published, photocopied, amateur magazine… derived from its ‘fanzine’ predecessors of the 1930s sci-fi and 1970s punk rock subcultures.” In this class, we will survey a collection of zines from a variety of genres as we move through the structures and processes that facilitate this empowering form. As we brainstorm content, we will learn several potential zine structures and explore printing processes including photocopying, silkscreen and digital printing. The class will culminate for each student with the completion of a zine, self-published and produced in multiple for immediate distribution. Emily will join us for our final class as a visiting instructor, an opportunity which will coincide with her installation of a zine exhibition and gallery talk at BookWorks. We will explore distribution possibilities for our finished works, and upon completion of the class, each student will have the opportunity to include a copy of their zine in the exhibition.

This class will explore the possibilities for thinking through the book with code. Students will be introduced to Processing, “an open source programming language and environment for people who want to create images, animations, and interactions. Initially developed to serve as a software sketchbook and to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context, Processing also has evolved into a tool for generating finished professional work.” http://www.processing.org/ Using Processing, we will generate imagery for a collaborative book edition, which we will print on the letterpress using photopolymer plates and handset type. Students will leave this three-day class with introductory knowledge of Processing, typesetting, letterpress printing and book binding. In addition, each student will walk away with multiple copies of our finished, collaboratively produced book. No experience necessary!
