Screenprinting : Photochemical Appropriation

April 2 and 3, Saturday and Sunday, 10 – 5 PM
$225, includes a $15 materials fee
Instructor, Daniel Maw

Part 3 of this 4 part series will introduce you to the most precise method of creating stencils on a silkscreen – photochemical emulsion.  We will discuss how this process works including how to coat a screen with emulsion, how to generate a transparency, how to operate the exposure unit, and how to develop the image on your screen.  Furthermore I will introduce you to the practice of splitting an edition, the end result being two similar but not identical editions of prints. The suggested theme we will be working with is appropriation. No Pre-requisite needed. Students may sign up for this class without taking Parts 1 or 2 of this series.

Course Description

Learn one of the most versatile and home-friendly printmaking techniques around.  Screenprinting requires no dangerous solvents or expensive printing presses.  You will learn how to prepare and create stencils both by hand and through a photochemical process.  In addition to creating hand-rendered imagery, you will learn how to prepare images digitally by way of scanning into and manipulating with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.  We will create repeatable editions and unique singular pieces of art as well. Experiment with printing on traditional paper surfaces and non-traditional surfaces such as wood, vinyl, textiles, or a wall in your home!  The course is great for beginners and experienced printers, alike.

Students Provide:

Sketchbook, Exacto knife, #11 blades, Various size brushes and drawing materials, Bleach or bleach-based toilet cleaner (liquid), 1-2 spatulas, Apron, Set of 2 quarter-inch round registration pins, 1 roll of clear packing tape, 12 oz. bottle of baby oil, 24 x 36 inch 5 mm acetate, Black Sharpie, Old plastic card (for coating screens with emulsion), 23 x 31 inch silkscreen, approximate size (If you don’t have one, BookWorks has some to use), Two Sponges, Water Bowl, Pair of Scissors, Newsprint (22 x 30 inch pad of 100 – for proofing prints), Printmaking Paper (instructor will suggest a few papers for printing).

This workshop is an exercise in developing content and narrative for bookwork through creative interview and research techniques. Students will make limited edition pamphlets and single page books based on facts that they gather from one-on-one interviews with their classmates. Each student will select a fact or story they find interesting from their interview, and expand on this piece of information to make a 5 copy editioned book, using a photocopier or inkjet printer. The contents of these books will be created through collage, drawing and painting, handwriting and typewriting. Students are encouraged to bring laptop computers.

Please bring:

  • paints, pencils, collage materials,
  • scissors and
  • various papers (for collage and also cover and text weight for books) -

This class will explore the possibilities for thinking through the book with code. Students will be introduced to Processing, “an open source programming language and environment for people who want to create images, animations, and interactions. Initially developed to serve as a software sketchbook and to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context, Processing also has evolved into a tool for generating finished professional work.” http://www.processing.org/ Using Processing, we will generate imagery for a collaborative book edition, which we will print on the letterpress using photopolymer plates and handset type. Students will leave this three-day class with introductory knowledge of Processing, typesetting, letterpress printing and book binding. In addition, each student will walk away with multiple copies of our finished, collaboratively produced book. No experience necessary!

There will be demonstrations, time to work and experiment, and plenty of time to learn from each other’s results.  All levels welcome.
