The Accordion as Instigator: Hybrid Books

February 19-20, 2011 new class
Saturday & Sunday 9:00 am-4:00 pm
$202 + materials fee

Instructor: Bridget Elmer

The accordion fold is captivating structure in and of itself. In combination with other components (pamphlet stitch, series of single sheets, tabs and boards), this historical form becomes an instigator of all things contemporary! On the first day of this exciting class, students will learn the basics of making two variations of the accordion fold book: the trimmed and tipped accordion and the double folio accordion. In addition, both adhesive and non-adhesive board coverings and attachments will be demonstrated. On the second day of the workshop, we will begin to experiment with our accordions, integrating a variety of additional structures into the existing forms. Students will walk away with a truly unique collection of forms that will redefine the accordion for all of us!

Photopolymer Plates Using Scratch Negatives

February 26 & 27, 2011
Saturday & Sunday: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (1 hour lunch break)

Instructor: Frank Brannon
$238 -includes $35 materials fee for photopolymer plates, paper and blank negatives for scratching, inks, solvents, maintenance of presses and equipment.

Photopolymer plates, which are sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, are used regularly in letterpress printing for illustration. A plate can be made by scratching a negative material with a sharp stylus; producing an illustration of one’s own design. The workshop will cover photopolymer plate development from these scratch negatives and the process of printing from them. We will use a UV light exposure unit for class, and we’ll also explore other techniques to make these plates at home.

Image-making on the Vandercook: Variations on Relief

February 11, 12, 13
Friday, Saturday, Sunday 10 – 5 PM

Instructor: Jessica White
$335 – includes a $30 studio fee for inks, solvents and other expendable supplies, maintenance of the presses, cutting equipment and supplies provided by instructor.

In this class, we’ll focus on creating images through collagraph, pressure, and block printing techniques on the Vandercook press. Exploration will revolve around creating low-relief collages made with textured objects (fabric, string, paper cut-outs), then printing from them either placed on the tympan underneath the printed page (called a pressure print) or placed on the press bed (called a collagraph). The resulting image is hazy and atmospheric, with lovely detailed textures. The class will also be introduced to basic linoleum block printmaking. We will create a series of small prints and an edition for a class exchange. No previous printing experience is necessary.

  • intro, cut paper for pressure prints, prep blocks for collagraph
  • intro to the press, print pressures, start on collagraph blocks
  • print blocks, print pressures, intro registration
  • prep linoleum – transfer image, show how to cut
  • print linoleum, demo multiple block prints
  • print linoleum, demo reduction cut

Please bring the following items:

  • pencil and paper/notebook for taking notes
  • collage materials: cloth, lace, string, textured paper scraps
