Artists Journals and Sketchbooks Exhibit

Images from an exhibit of journals and sketchbooks kept by artists, showing January 14 – February 28, 2011 at the Asheville BookWorks Gallery.

Journals and Sketchbooks Exhibit opens Friday, January 14

Guylaine Couture, Sketchbook #48

Artist Journals and Sketchbooks exhibit opens Friday, January 14, 2011 at BookWorks Gallery with a reception from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

Often hidden away on a shelf in an artist’s studio, or tucked into a bag on a trip, creative journals and sketchbooks offer a rare glimpse into the artistic process. These are the books that have been put to use, either as a written text or as a sketchbook, and frequently a combination of both. Equally inspiring to the artist who made them as to the viewer seeing them for the first time, come take a peek into creative minds working on a different level than finished artwork.

Frank Riccio, 'Avi' Sketchbook

This exhibition was juried by Gwen Diehn, author, artist and teacher. Diehn retired from Warren Wilson College in 2009 where she taught printmaking, drawing and artist books. In March 2011 she will be teachingDesigning, Making and Keeping Real Life Journals at Asheville BookWorks based on her most recent book, Real Life Journals, Lark Books, 2010.
