Memory Theatres: The Photographic Work of Bea Nettles
Bea Nettles will give an overview of her photographic work, beginning with her earliest mixed media images of the 70’s, her photographic narratives, and ending with her most recent limited edition artists’ books. As her work is autobiographical, she has explored her roles as daughter, wife and mother as well as her memories and relationships to particular landscapes.
This event is free and open to the public.

The exhibition career of Bea Nettles began in 1970 when her work was shown in “Photography Into Sculpture,” at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Recognition as an experimental photographic artist followed and her work has been featured in over two hundred exhibitions throughout the world. Nettles’ work is found in history texts and has been regularly reviewed in the media. Over 26 public collections contain her work and she has received two National Endowment for the Arts Photography Fellowships and grants from the New York and Illinois State Arts Councils. Nettles has taught photography to over one thousand students since 1970. She has delivered lectures and workshops internationally and is widely recognized for her innovations in mixed media photography and photographic books.

This two-day workshop will explore image making in hand papermaking. Using multiple moulds and vats of pigmented pulp, along with contact paper, dental syringes, paintbrushes and squeeze bottles, participants will develop images by layering and overlapping thin veils of pulp. Basic sheet forming and pigmenting will be reviewed. Studio fee is included and provides all pulp, pigments and other supplies.
Please bring the following items:
- soft bristle art paintbrushes (variety of sizes and styles)
- scissors
- x-acto knife
- sharpie marker
- 10 small plastic containers – small yogurts cups work well
- watercolor pencils – variety of colors if you have them – any brand
- apron & wet shoes

$192 + $30-35 materials fee: covers gut, release papers, a variety of steel wire, vice, tools, pumice soap, vinegar, paint, steel wool
This two-day class will introduce the wonders and potential of working with steel wire and gut. Wire has linear elements and strength while gut is sheer and skin-like. They can be used to create forms separately or together in one piece to create magical translucent forms. The first day we will focus on exploring the inherent properties and potential each material has to offer. We will work the wire with hand tools to create forms to stand by themselves or as a skeleton or framework for the gut. Gut will be explored as a skin and to create paper-like sheets suitable for books or printmaking. Come explore these exciting materials.
Please bring the following items:
- journal for note taking and favorite journal writing implement
- work clothes or an apron as the steel is dirty
- old cotton rag
- comfortable pliers with wire cutter
- vice grips and small metal cutters
- small sharp pointed scissors
- safety glasses/goggles
- needle tool or other sharp pointed metal tool
- 2 – 16 or 32 oz plastic recycled cottage cheese etc container with lid
- sponge
- small hand towel
- small enamel or plastic cafeteria style tray
- thread and needles for embellishment and construction
- favorite drawing/painting tools
- any odds bit of wire lying around rusty or not
- odd’n ends of things to experiment with, scraps of wire and metal, seeds, or other things to enclose in the gut….

Prerequisite: Introduction to Handset Letterpress Printing or equivalent experience or classes in printing.

$383 ( A $25 studio fee is included that covers all inks, solvents and other expendable supplies needed for printing and contributes to the on-going upkeep of the presses and paper cutters.)
The goal of this class is to increase participant’s familiarity and experience with letterpress printing. Each student will produce a single signature, pamphlet stitched book, or a broadside, using a text and theme of their choosing. We will focus on topics such as letterpress project planning, imposition, multiple run registration and developing participant’s letterpress printing skills. We will also explore printmaking techniques using the Vandercook press, e.g., linoleum block cuts for illustrative purposes. The final result of this class will be the completion of a full letterpress printed project and development of the skills needed to print independently.

Come and discover the joys of repairing and restoring your favorite old and damaged books, transformed to tombs strong and beautiful, ready for many more years of use. If you have begun the study, come to further advance your skills. Review, practice and build on already learned techniques, and learn new ones. Students will explore paper cleaning and mending, repair of hinges and joints, cosmetic and structural repairs to text blocks and outer covers. Sources of archival products will be provided, as well as materials for all repairs. Go home with at least 10 different types of repair techniques. Depending on the skill level of participants, preservation and repair of leather bindings will be addressed.
This class begins with one full day of study followed by three Wednesday evenings.
