August 11, 18, 25 and September 1, 8, 15, 2010
Wednesdays: 6:00 – 9:00 pm
Limited to 6 students.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Handset Letterpress Printing (Letterpress1) and one letterpress class focused on image making, or equivalent experience or classes in printing.
Instructor: Jessica White
$253. (Includes a $25 studio fees to cover inks, solvents and other expendable supplies needed for printing and contributes to the on-going upkeep of the presses and paper cutters.)
In this class we will integrate text, image, and the book structure into one project while increasing participants’ familiarity and experience with letterpress printing. Building on technical printing knowledge, students will explore the concept of the whole book: how choices made about content and form affect the process as well as the finished object. Classes will include demos as well as discussions about project planning, design principles, materiality of letterpress prints, and time-based reading inherent to book structures. Each student will design and produce a book using text, image, and structure of their choosing.

Look through your jewelry box, closet and goodwill pile for a forgotten green, leather mini-skirt, gaudy costume jewelry you never wear or a vintage purse with missing stitches; anything you think could come back to life in the form of a book cover, text pages or embellishments. You don’t have to know anything about book making. We’ll use basic book arts principles and approachable bindings to help guide you to your most ultimate book creation.
