Marbled and Paste Papers in Action

Grand Canyon Triptych, Jacqueline Wygant

BookWorks presents a summer exhibit of hand marbled and paste papers by book and paper artists from around the country. As artists, we often see these papers in a studio as they’re being made, or in a stack stored away, waiting to be used. In this exhibit, Marbled and Paste Papers in Action, we get a chance to see them in action; in books, boxes, origami structures, and as installation pieces. This exhibit spotlights work that uses these papers in unusual and unexpected ways – in creative explorations beyond the endsheet. The marbled or paste papers in this show are all made by the artist or by another artist through a collaboration (no store-bought papers here).

Flames, Lora Brueck

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, JULY 15, 5:30 – 8 PM.

The juror for this exhibit is Steve Pittelkow, an internationally recognized book artist who has been marbling for over 30 years. According to Steve, “The art world does not understand marbled or paste paper. How many artists have had to invent names for the process just to be included in an exhibit? With this exhibit, we no longer have to use terms such as hydroprint or aqueous print. To those of us who love decorative paper, it’s just plain marbling. Paste paper, too, has been denigrated as adult finger painting when it has just as rich a history and use as marbled paper. So, here’s an exhibit just for us.”

Designing the Mentoring Stamp, Peter Verheyen

The exhibit opens July 1, 2010 and runs through August 31, 2010.

A gallery reception with a juror’s talk will be held on Thursday, July 15, 5:30 -8pm.

This exhibit was organized and installed by Jessica White, BookWorks Gallery Coordinator.
