Marbled and Paste Papers in Action

Grand Canyon Triptych, Jacqueline Wygant

BookWorks presents a summer exhibit of hand marbled and paste papers by book and paper artists from around the country. As artists, we often see these papers in a studio as they’re being made, or in a stack stored away, waiting to be used. In this exhibit, Marbled and Paste Papers in Action, we get a chance to see them in action; in books, boxes, origami structures, and as installation pieces. This exhibit spotlights work that uses these papers in unusual and unexpected ways – in creative explorations beyond the endsheet. The marbled or paste papers in this show are all made by the artist or by another artist through a collaboration (no store-bought papers here).

Flames, Lora Brueck

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, JULY 15, 5:30 – 8 PM.

The juror for this exhibit is Steve Pittelkow, an internationally recognized book artist who has been marbling for over 30 years. According to Steve, “The art world does not understand marbled or paste paper. How many artists have had to invent names for the process just to be included in an exhibit? With this exhibit, we no longer have to use terms such as hydroprint or aqueous print. To those of us who love decorative paper, it’s just plain marbling. Paste paper, too, has been denigrated as adult finger painting when it has just as rich a history and use as marbled paper. So, here’s an exhibit just for us.”

Designing the Mentoring Stamp, Peter Verheyen

The exhibit opens July 1, 2010 and runs through August 31, 2010.

A gallery reception with a juror’s talk will be held on Thursday, July 15, 5:30 -8pm.

This exhibit was organized and installed by Jessica White, BookWorks Gallery Coordinator.

You will sleep in a castle, visit colorful markets and galleries and enjoy lovely rustic meals. Wake to freshly baked croissant, eggs and fruit each morning. At days end the group shares in a lovely five course meal featuring locally grown vegetables, meats, wines, and hand made cheeses.

A spacious barn complete with vaulted ceilings and cobblestone floor will serve as the studio. Or hole up in one of the tower rooms and create a private retreat. You are invited to write, paint, draw, collage, stitch and photograph in an enchanted setting.

In this workshop, we’ll be explorers of Le Pin, using the gardens, woodlands, vineyards and castle as inspiration for miniature prints and hand made books. Students will climb through the centuries; photographing gargoyles, recording textures, sketching and abstracting ideas for images suitable for printing. Mini prints can be created as individual works and/or integrated into hand made books with a distinctive point of view. Studio investigations will also include stitching, working with collage and paint, antique french papers and fabrics and various book bindings. Come explore the extraordinary and exotic! All levels welcome. College credit available.

Hidden Treasures: Fore-edge Painting for Everyone

July 9 – 12, 2010
Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (1-hour lunch break)
Limited to 8 students.

Instructor: Jeanne Bennett
$425 + $220 materials fee: see note at end of workshop description for details

Why do we rarely see books with fore-edge paintings? Because they are tucked away in closely guarded exclusive private collections and libraries.  Artists and bookbinders alike will love this class.  Inspired by the most glorious period of book decoration, each student in this class will be taught all the techniques necessary to create their own fore-edge masterpieces. Students will transform a simple book block into the hidden magic of a fore-edge painting as they:

  • Fan and clamp a book in their own Portable Combination Fepping Press™
  • Transfer a design to the fore-edge
  • Paint the design in watercolors
  • Prepare the spine with a double fan adhesive, kerf-cuts and spine linings
  • Apply an acrylic edge decoration (this “hides” the fore-edge painting)
  • Convert the book block into a beautiful binding
  • Learn how to make designs for future books
  • Learn the history and many other aspects of fore-edge painting

At the end of the class, students will take with them this hidden treasure and the knowledge to continue an almost forgotten art.

Materials Fee: $220.00, includes the kit for completing the fore-edge painting and

  • Portable Combination Fepping Press™, a multi-purpose combination press for:
  • fore-edge painting
  • fan gluing
  • nipping
  • finishing and safely transporting the completed  book

It also includes the book block, design for fore-edge painting, FEP stick [maulstick], sanding block and sandpaper, graph paper, graphite paper, tracing paper, mull, spine lining paper, linen thread, book boards, decorative cover and endpapers, book cloth and a non-skid pad for the press, and many other items.

Please bring the following items:

  • Watercolor set, small watercolor brushes—including rounds, No 3/0,  No. 0 and No. 6, preferably sable (more, if the student wishes to bring them),
  • E-Xacto knife with #11 blades or a small breakaway craft knife
  • paper-cutting scissors
  • bone folder
  • 9×12” or larger cutting surface
  • pencil and eraser
  • metal straight edge 12 to 18” ruler
  • plastic straight edge 12 to 18” ruler
  • Apron

All other materials for this class will be provided by instructor, including: Acrylics for edge decoration, ruler, glue/edge decorating brush, palettes, water/paste/acrylic paint containers, paper towels, paste/PVA, waste paper, wax paper, masking tape.  Some watercolors will be provided for those students who do not wish to purchase expensive supplies for this class.
