Taking Encaustic Further (Encaustic Advanced)
June 16 – 18, 2010
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (1-hour lunch break every day)
Limited to six students.
Instructor: Celia Gray
$303 + materials fees: $40
Materials fee covers all wax, paint, brushes, wood, paper and other expendables of the process.
This is a three-day workshop designed for people who have already examined the possibilities of encaustic painting and want to further investigate the subtleties of the material. We will revisit each method of the painting process and develop it further, introducing new techniques and tools for your studio practice. We will expand on methods of making medium, application, fusing, layering with clear wax, texturing, collage, working larger and more. This class is designed to focus existing skills and remove barriers for artists beginning to work in encaustic. Experience with encaustic is required.
Please bring the following items:
- 3-6 wood panels 12” or larger, but no larger than 20” (¾ birch plywood works well)
- scissors
- needle tool (clay needle tools work well and can be found at High Water Clays)
- scraping tool (again, High Water Clay has great options but a small knife will work)
- apron or work clothes
- any favorite tools
- collage or transfer materials for use or trade
- optional: 2 or 3 pieces of your work and/or examples of inspiration and/or influences
