Letterpress Printing III

Letterpress III focuses upon the printing press itself: roller height adjustment, tympan packing, inking and general maintenance. Through a small printing project, participants will first re-familiarize themselves with the process of letterpress printing, and then we will look at the press in detail. Troubleshooting in printing related to the press will be covered with the goal of each participant ready to work independently in the letterpress studio.

Papermaking II

Prerequisite: Introductory Papermaking or equivalent experience

Studio fee covers all fibers and other expendable supplies needed for papermaking and contributes to the on-going upkeep of the studio.

The focus of the three-day course is in the use of the Hollander paper beater as well as improving your sheet formation. Using various fibers participants will become comfortable with the use of beater with a special emphasis on safety. The goal is to provide you with the experience to successfully rent space in the studio for your own work.

Please bring the following items:

  • Plastic apron if you have one, and wear rubber-soled shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting wet, and ear plugs

Clam Shell Box!

Materials included: cloth, papers, book board, and adhesives.

They look much more difficult than they really are. Bring a small book of your choosing and learn to construct a clam shell box (also called a fall-back box) for it.  You will not even need a ruler to accomplish the feat! Students will learn what simple measurements to take, how to cut the parts required and the chronology of assembly.  Everyone will leave class with a completed project and the directions to make many more at home.  No previous experience is needed.

All book cloth, boards, papers, tools, and glues will be provided.  You only need to bring a mechanical pencil and 2 pieces of paper for your note taking.  Bring a camera if you have one, pictures are good visual aids.

Encaustic Open Studio

Materials fee covers about a pound in a half or two of wax and damar, paints, table paper, and propane.

This is a one-day opportunity for people who have taken a basic encaustic painting class who would like the space and equipment to continue their exploration. I will provide the equipment and wax medium and be available for questions but mostly this is an open studio workday. Students should bring projects or panels, scraping and incising tools, and any collage materials they would like to use. The medium, paints, and equipment will be provided.

  • in-progress project or materials to start a new such as: wood panels and material for collage

  • PVA glue
