Steve Pittelkow, visiting instructor from St. Paul held a ‘Cartonnage’ class this week. Cartonnage is a French term that covers, book binding, boxmaking and objets d’art. It is also the art of making elegant and functional household objects from bookboard and incredibly beautiful decorative paper. Here are examples of some very accomplished student work.

Shannon “Papierschnitt” Brock has been the Art Director of Carriage House Paper since 1996. She holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Shannon has taught papermaking throughout the east coast. She maintains her paper mill and studio, Gaptoothed Studio, in Brooklyn, NY, and exhibits her pulp paintings and sculptural work nationally. The April 17-18 weekend hand papermaking class had six participants who made pulp from several fibers: abaca (a banana family plant) and cotton linters. We also cut up cotton clothing to make cotton rag paper. The focus of the class was sheet formation. It was a great time on a warm spring weekend.
