February 19-20, 2011 new class
Saturday & Sunday 9:00 am-4:00 pm
$202 + materials fee
Instructor: Bridget Elmer
The accordion fold is captivating structure in and of itself. In combination with other components (pamphlet stitch, series of single sheets, tabs and boards), this historical form becomes an instigator of all things contemporary! On the first day of this exciting class, students will learn the basics of making two variations of the accordion fold book: the trimmed and tipped accordion and the double folio accordion. In addition, both adhesive and non-adhesive board coverings and attachments will be demonstrated. On the second day of the workshop, we will begin to experiment with our accordions, integrating a variety of additional structures into the existing forms. Students will walk away with a truly unique collection of forms that will redefine the accordion for all of us!

I use printmaking both as a personal studio practice and a community building process. Some of my favorite things about printmaking are: the repetitive process of editioning, the surprise of lifting the paper off the plate, the depth and detail possible with scratching into metal, sharing a studio with others and editioning with a group of people, and multiples!
I received a BFA with a concentration in printmaking from Pratt Institute and an MA in Community Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art. I have taught workshops in printmaking and bookbinding at the Inkshop Printmaking Center and Olive Branch Press and at the Big Red Barn at Cornell University, both in Ithaca, NY. I have also taught art and social change curriculum at Kids on the Hill, an after school program for high school aged young people in Baltimore, MD.

In this class, we’ll focus on creating images through collagraph, pressure, and block printing techniques on the Vandercook press. Exploration will revolve around creating low-relief collages made with textured objects (fabric, string, paper cut-outs), then printing from them either placed on the tympan underneath the printed page (called a pressure print) or placed on the press bed (called a collagraph). The resulting image is hazy and atmospheric, with lovely detailed textures. The class will also be introduced to basic linoleum block printmaking. We will create a series of small prints and an edition for a class exchange. No previous printing experience is necessary.
